Telecom Personal WAP Portal

At this very moment you are sitting at your computer, using a browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape or any other) to navigate through the Web, and you have accessed this particular Web page. But now suppose you are at the street and, without getting into a cyber café, you want to navigate the Web and get into a certain page. You can do this through the wireless Internet services, if and only if your mobile phone is web enabled (nowadays most are) and the owner of the Web page has made its content accessible through your mobile phone. This is possible thanks to the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) which, having been designed for devices with a small screen and with limited I/O data entry capacity and reduced bandwidth, allows the content and Internet services being accessed from mobile phones. A Web page that provides wireless Internet content is said to be a WAP Portal.

Currently, just a small fraction of the more than one billion Web sites provides some wireless Internet content. Telecom Personal decided to provide their customers having any type and model of mobile phones, with access to information (financial, weather, news, transit, movie programs, etc.) and products (ring tones, wallpaper, icons, etc.). For this purpose, Moviltek, Softron’s software development division, has been asked to develop, implement, maintain and host a WAP portal.

The portal provided by Moviltek has a management tool that, once the type and model of mobile phone has been identified, the content is dynamically modified to optimize the output code, thus allowing an optimum content visualization at a minimum connection time. The events related with the use of the portal are stored on a data base and later used to generate statistics in the form of HTML, Excel and PDF reports. Telecom Personal has been provided with a set of portal monitoring tools, for service level control.

The portal is currently receiving more than 80 thousand visits daily.
